mne: RE: [DeTomaso] ZF refill -- RED LINE OIL
I'm posting some advice I got from Red Line Oils Tech service about a
year ago. Their MTL and MTL90 may work fine in our ZFs but they were not
the product he recommended. Hope it clears up the Red Line Gear Oil
choice for the ZF in a Pantera. I am starting with 2 1/2 litres of Red
Line 75W90NS and a litre of Red Line 75W90. I'll adjust the mix by trial
and error as required to get the best compromise between the
requirements of the synchros and the posi clutch from that starting
point. YMMV Barry Seib
FROM REF LINE OILS
"I recommend the 75W90NS in the Pantera because the gear lube is being
used to lubricate both the transmission and the differential. The NS
fluid doesn't have friction modifiers so isn't too slippery for the
synchros and will allow good shiftability. If the transaxle uses a
clutch type limited slip and excess chatter occurs when making a slow
tight turn, then a slight amount of friction modifier could be added to
the NS to reduce this, being aware that too much can effect the
shiftability. The 75W90 contains 5% friction modifier and this could be
too much for some synchros."
